Buckeye Tidbits
Another city that is located in Maricopa County is Buckeye. The city is the westernmost suburb that is included in the Metro Phoenix (or the Phoenix metropolitan area.) In 2017, Buckeye was named the fastest-growing city with a population of 50,000 or more. It was the only city in Arizona that was on the Top 15 list.
If you are curious on how Buckeye started, the story started when Malie M. Jackson developed a town in 1888. Because he was from Ohio, he decided to name the new town after The Buckeye State, which was the one of Ohio’s nicknames.
However, Buckeye wasn’t really the first choice. Originally, the town was named “Sidney.” In 1910, it was officially changed to Buckeye since the town was around the Buckeye Canal and the town’s founder came from Ohio. When Buckeye was incorporated as a town in 1929, it only had 440 acres of land. But now, Buckeye occupies a total land area of 393.24 square miles.
Hugh Watson, the first mayor of Buckeye, established the Buckeye Valley Bank. Now, it is the location of the commercial center of Buckeye. It was only in 2014 when the town officially became the City of Buckeye. Two years later, the average household income in Buckeye was $61,939. It was noticeably higher than Arizona’s average, which was only $53,558.
Because Buckeye is only 30 miles west of Phoenix, the city experiences a hot desert climate. Like the other cities and towns near the Sonoran Desert, summers are intensely hot. The highest temperature ever recorded happened on July 28, 1995, and it was reported to be 125 degrees Fahrenheit.
Rainy weather is not as frequent in Buckeye. From 1971 to 2000, rainfall would not exceed 4.52 inches. Additionally, the heaviest reported rainfall was only 4.90 inches. Meanwhile, on a typical day, the winter season in Buckeye would not get 68 degrees Fahrenheit. There was no recorded snowfall from 1971 to 2000.
Originally, Buckeye started out having Monroe Avenue as its main street. Today, the residential areas expanded to neighborhoods such as Festival Ranch, Riata West, Tartesso, Verrado, Westpark, and Sundance. In 2007, a shopping center opened in Sundance, and it was named the Sundance Towne Center. Buckeye plans to make more communities namely Sun Valley Villages, Westwind, Sienna Hills, Henry Park, and many more.
In 2015, Buckeye’s population consisted of 62,582 residents and 21,628 households. In 2017, the numbers went up to 68,453 people. Last year, the estimated 2018 population was 74,370. Obviously, this upward trend will continue especially after reading news that a new city will soon rise near Buckeye.
The Buckeye Hills Recreation Area is a popular destination for both locals and tourist. It is just 7 miles south of Buckeye. The city plans to create a 900-acre lake in the future, but as of now, the people can enjoy the Skyline Regional Park. The park, located on the southern region of the White Tank Mountains, occupies an 8,700 acres of land.
As for future plans, a smart city will be developed soon. In November 2017, Buckeye became a popular news item. According to the media and news outlets, a company, linked to business tycoon Bill Gates, bought a 24,800-acre property that’s in the middle of Buckeye and Tonopah. According to reports, the property was sold for $80 million, and the company plans to name it Belmont.
