Scottsdale Tidbits
Scottsdale, a city in Maricopa County, got its name from Winfield Scott. The U.S. Army Chaplain, along with his brother George, were one of the first residents in Scottsdale.
In 1888, Winfield Scott came to Salt River Valley with his wife Helen, and they bought 640 acres of property.
The Scott brothers developed a new town called Orangedale because there were citrus plants all over their property. Soon after, people started coming in, and the townspeople decided to rename Orangedale to Scottsdale in 1894. Two years after, Scottsdale formed their own school system, and the first school opened in 1897.
