Tempe Tidbits
Named after the Vale of Tempe, the city of Tempe is not anywhere near Greece. Instead, Tempe is located in Maricopa County, Arizona. It is specifically situated in the East Valley region of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. In Tempe, you will see the main campus of Arizona State University.
Tempe is surrounded by Phoenix, Guadalupe, Scottsdale, Chandler, Mesa and the Salt River Pima–Maricopa Indian Community. The Hohokam tribe were the original settlers of Tempe, and they have lived in the area during the 15th century. In 1865, the Fort McDowell was established near Tempe, and this trigger further development.
The name Tempe was because of the suggestion of Darrell Duppa. He suggested the name because there was a 300-foot butte along the Salt River Valley, and this reminded his of the Vale of Tempe in Greece. After Tempe was incorporated in 1894, the city eventually became a residential area for the people in Phoenix.
Tempe was also recognized as a center of education. In fact, Tempe houses one of Arizona’s 3 leading universities, which is the Arizona State University. Other colleges and career schools in the city are: Maricopa County Community College, Rio Salado Community College, University of Phoenix, Brookline College, Bryan University, and several others.
The Arizona State University (or ASU) is a public university that has campuses throughout the state. It is one of the biggest public universities in the country. In 2018, ASU had about 80,000 enrolled in its key campuses. In 2019, the U.S. News & World Report recognized ASUS as the top 1 university in their list of the Most Innovative Schools in America.
With the university vast influence, it’s no doubt that ASU fuels the city’s economy. Aside from the ASU being a top employer, there are other headquarters based in Tempe such as Insight Enterprises, Salt River Project, Circle K, Fulton Homes and Mobile Mini. Originally, Cold Stone Creamery was included on the list of businesses based in Tempe. However, they moved their headquarters to Scottsdale.
You might think Tempe is all work and no play, but that’s totally a misconception because there are many things to do in Tempe. Outdoor activities are within reach for both locals and tourist. First off, there’s the Tempe Town Lake. It is open for all, and everyone is encouraged to play and do their recreation activities. In 2013, there were roughly around 2.7 million people who visited the lake.
If you want a more adventurous outdoor activity, then it’s time to visit the Papago and South Mountain Parks. They offer various activities such as rock climbing, mountain hiking, road biking, and even provide equestrian activities. Every November, the yearly Ironman Triathlon happens in Tempe.
Arizona Mills, one of the state’s biggest shopping center, is situated within the city’s border and near the Guadalupe. Tempe is also the location of the first IKEA branch in Arizona. If Arizona Mill’s indoor concept is not your type, then try visiting the Tempe Marketplace. It is an open air mall that features laser shows and live bands at night. It is located southeast of the Tempe Town Lake.
In 2017, the U.S. Census Bureau reports a total of 185,038 people residing in Tempe. The 2018 population estimates reported an increase, making the total numbers of residents to 192,364.
