Antipasto Platters: A Perfect Appetizer for the Holidays

Antipasto, which means “before the meal,” harkens back to medieval times in Italy when diners mingled over finger foods before sitting down to eat; early recipes included everything from sugared nuts to clotted cream to spiced ham.  Over the centuries, antipasto platters have found their way into restaurants and catered events as an appetizer selection.

Because of the finger food variety, simplicity in preparation, and beautiful array of color, we feel antipasto platters are the perfect Christmas dinner appetizers for hungry family members to munch on while they’re mingling, opening gifts, or just relaxing prior to the big holiday feast.

A colorful antipasto platter is a beautiful centerpiece or buffet item.  For a more elegant look, consider serving the antipasti on a beautiful silver tray.  If rustic is more your style, a large wooden board is the perfect choice.  Have small appetizer plates and forks available for guests to serve themselves.

We suggest creating an artfully arranged antipasto platter of Mediterranean olives, roasted red peppers, marinated artichokes and mushrooms, pepperoncini, salami, prosciutto, chunks of parmesan and fresh mozzarella.antipesto appetizer holiday platter

In true Italian style, antipasti calls for a glass of Campari or Prosecco, but a great Italian wine such as Chianti will also pair well with the antipasti.  The mixture of rich color, texture, and taste that will whet the appetite of your guests for your delicious holiday meal soon to follow!

Salute!
